Community Accessibility & Inclusion Review (CAIR) Program

Accessibility. Inclusion. Community. Opportunity.

What if you could see your business through the eyes of customers with disabilities—and receive practical feedback that could help you create a more welcoming experience for everyone?

The Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities (MCPD) created the Community Accessibility & Inclusion Review (CAIR) Program to bring businesses and the disability community together in a collaborative effort to identify barriers, share firsthand perspectives, and encourage meaningful improvements.

Why Participate in CAIR?

Accessibility is about more than meeting requirements. It is about creating an environment where customers feel welcomed, respected, and included.

A CAIR review gives your business an opportunity to:

  • Gain firsthand perspective from individuals who understand accessibility challenges

  • Identify potential physical, communication, and customer-experience barriers you may not have noticed

  • Receive practical observations and recommendations you can use to prioritize improvements

  • Demonstrate your commitment to accessibility and inclusion

  • Build stronger connections with the disability community

  • Show current and future customers that accessibility matters to your organization

Your Participation Comes With Recognition

Businesses that participate in CAIR receive more than a review. They receive an opportunity to showcase their commitment to inclusion.

Participating businesses receive:

✓ CAIR Accessibility & Inclusion Certificate
A professional certificate recognizing your participation and commitment that all can see.

✓ Digital CAIR Recognition Badge
A badge you can proudly display on your website and digital platforms.

✓ MCPD Business Spotlight
A complimentary spotlight through MCPD’s website and social media, helping introduce your business and your commitment to the community.

✓ Personalized Accessibility & Inclusion Summary
A written summary of observations, potential barriers, and practical recommendations, including areas that may warrant immediate attention as well as improvements that can be considered over time and also everything they’re doing right.

✓ Opportunity for Follow-Up Recognition
If your business chooses to make improvements based on the review, you may request a follow up review and receive additional recognition for your continued commitment to accessibility and inclusion. But we do NOT report our findings in your spotlight nor do we report what we find to any government related establishment.

CAIR Is an Opportunity—Not a Penalty

Your participation is voluntary, and CAIR is designed around education, awareness, collaboration, and improvement.

MCPD does not issue citations, report businesses for violations, or make legal determinations regarding ADA compliance. CAIR is not a government inspection, enforcement program, code inspection, or legal review. It is a community-based observational review intended to provide perspective, identify potential barriers, and offer practical suggestions.

Your business decides what recommendations it wishes to pursue. The goal is not to find fault—it is to help businesses see opportunities.

Invest in Inclusion. Strengthen Your Community.

Your participation helps create a Winston-Salem where accessibility is considered from the start—not after someone encounters a barrier.

By partnering with MCPD through CAIR, your business is not simply receiving a review. You are gaining perspective, building community connections, receiving practical feedback, and publicly demonstrating that every customer matters.

Join the CAIR Program and become part of a community working toward a more accessible, welcoming, and inclusive Winston-Salem.
